It's Life Insurance Awareness Month — Here's Why That Actually Matters
Every September, the insurance industry sets aside a month to talk about something most people would rather not think about: what happens to the people who depend on you financially if you're suddenly not there.
That's Life Insurance Awareness Month, and if you're one of the many people who's been meaning to look into life insurance "eventually," this is your nudge.
The gap is bigger than people think
Study after study shows the same thing: most Americans either have no life insurance at all, or have far less coverage than they'd actually need. It's not because people don't care about their families — it's because life insurance is easy to put off. There's no urgent deadline, no bill due next week. So it gets pushed to "someday."
The problem is that life insurance only works if it's already in place when you need it. You can't buy it after the fact.
A few reasons people put it off — and why they don't hold up
"I'm young and healthy, I don't need it yet." Actually, this is the best time to buy. Rates are based heavily on age and health, so locking in a policy now, while you qualify for better rates, almost always costs less than waiting.
"My job covers me." Group life insurance through an employer is a nice benefit, but it's usually limited (often just one or two times your salary) and it typically doesn't follow you if you leave the job. It's a supplement, not a replacement for your own policy.
"It's too expensive." Term life insurance, especially for someone in good health in their 30s or 40s, is often far more affordable than people expect. A lot of people are surprised when they actually get a quote.
"I don't know how much I need or what kind to get." This is genuinely the most common reason people stall out, and it's exactly what an agent is for. There's no one-size-fits-all number — it depends on your income, debts, dependents, and goals.
What to actually do this month
You don't need to have it all figured out today. The useful first step is just having a conversation: what you're trying to protect, who depends on you, and what coverage would realistically cost for your situation. From there we can look at term versus whole life, how much coverage makes sense, and how it fits alongside whatever coverage you may already have.
If life insurance has been sitting on your "someday" list, let this be the month it moves up. Reach out and let's talk through your options — no pressure, just information so you can make the call that's right for your family.
